How does an AA meeting work?
- A brief introduction
A chairperson opens the meeting. Often, someone reads from AA literature or meeting materials.
- We share experiences
Participants speak one at a time about alcoholism, sobriety and recovery. You do not have to say anything.
- Space for questions
There is usually time for questions and a brief chat before or after the meeting.
RESPECT AND TRUST
Your anonymity
is important.
Anonymity is a fundamental part of AA. We do not tell others who attends and we do not keep any membership registers.
Anything a person shares about themselves at a meeting must be treated as confidential. We do not publish any names or photographs of participants.
AA as an organisation does not need to be hidden. Anonymity exists to protect individual people.
Privacy & anonymityAlcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of people who share their experience, strength and hope regarding alcoholism and sobriety. We meet to help one another stop drinking and stay sober.
The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. Participation is voluntary. There is no application form to complete before a meeting, and AA does not keep any membership registers. You are welcome to come along, listen and decide for yourself whether the fellowship is right for you.
AA is independent and has no affiliation with any religion, political organisation, government body or institution. AA does not run treatment centres. At the meetings, you will meet people who share their own experiences.
There are no membership fees. AA is self-supporting through members’ voluntary contributions towards, amongst other things, venue hire and other shared running costs.
Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics achieve sobriety. Here on the website, you will find practical information about our local group in Halmstad. At AA Sweden, you can read more about the AA fellowship, literature and the Twelve-Step Programme.
